Unauthenticated Command Injection in TP-Link Archer AX21 (CVE-2023-1389)



Applicance Details

TP-Link Archer AX21 (AX1800) is a Dual-Band WiFi 6 router.


Vulnerability

TP-Link Archer AX21 could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the system, caused by a flaw in the country form of the /cgi-bin/luci;stok=/locale endpoint on the web management interface.


Identification

By sending a specially crafted request, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary commands on the system.


POST /cgi-bin/luci/;stok=/locale?form=country 

PAYLOAD -
operation=write&country=$(id>/tmp/out)

Detection

By turning this into a traffic file and matching rule, we are able to detect attempts to execute arbitrary commands on the system.
